1 Jazz Spot Life Time 2F, 2-3-8 Hiroshima-dōri 0985/27-8451 www1.ocn.ne.jp/~lifetime Kagoshima's prime jazz venue hosts a mix of main acts (music charge from ¥500) and jam sessions led by the drum-playing owner. Opening time: Mon– Sat 5pm– midnight

2 Suntory Shot Bar 1-12 Chūō-dōri In the thick of the nightlife district, this funky little bar is popular with locals and foreigners alike, and has a big array of whiskies and cocktails. Opening time: Tues– Sat 7pm–2am, Sun 7pm– midnight; closed 1st & 3rd of month

3 Weather King Again Building, 3-1-22 Tachibana-dōri Higashi 0995/25-9500 Basement live-house under the Merieges Hotel. There's usually a local band playing on a Sat night; the programme and ticket prices vary, but it's worth dropping by to see who's playing.
