Reimeikan

This museum provides a good introduction to local history and culture. Dioramas, life-size models and video presentations take you from Stone-age villages to post-1945 recovery on the ground floor, while upstairs is devoted to the history of the Shimazu family and other prominent local figures and to folk culture. Apart from a delightful mock-up of Tenmonkan arcade as it would have looked in the 1930s, the most interesting displays cover local festivals and the southern islands' distinct traditions, showing the influence of Melanesian culture from the islands of the West Pacific. Up on the top floor you'll find an exhibition of Satsuma ceramics and samurai swords. Opening time: Tues– Sun 9am–5pm, closed 25th of every monthPrice: ¥300
