2 Nakahara Bessō 15-19 Higashi-Sengoku-chō 099/225-2800 www.nakahara-bessou.co.jp Nicely decorated onsen hotel in the city centre overlooking Chūō Park. The Japanese-style rooms are better value, and though they do offer room-only rates, the meals are highly recommended. Price: ¥15000–30000

shindon@satsuma.ne.jp Tucked behind a temple opposite Kagoshima City Hall, close to Shiyakusho-mae tram stop. The best budget option in central Kagoshima, this homely ryokan offers decent-sized tatami rooms with shared facilities. Price: ¥5000-7000

5 Rainbow Sakurajima 1722-16 Yokoyama-chō, Sakurajima 099/293-2323 www.rainbow-sakurajima.com This modern hotel on the seafront, less than ten minutes' walk south round the harbour from the Sakurajima ferry terminal, makes a good base for exploring the island. It offers a mix of Japanese and Western rooms and a big onsen bath (¥300 to non-guests, 10am–10pm). Rates include two meals. Price: ¥15000-20000

099/293-2150 This big, relaxed hostel with dorm beds and an onsen bath is a ten-minute walk uphill from the ferry terminal – just follow the signs. Meals available. Price: Up to ¥3000
7 Sun Days Inn 9-8 Yamanokuchi-chō 099/227-5151 www.sundaysinn.com This nicely contemporary business hotel is conveniently located just off Izuro-dōri, slightly south of the centre. Rooms are nothing fancy but well appointed and above average size; ask for one with views of Sakurajima. Price: ¥5000–10000
8 Tōkyū Inn 5-1 Chūō-chō 099/256-0109 www.kagoshima-i.tokyuhotels.co.jp Three minutes' walk from central station, this is one of Kagoshima's more upmarket business hotels. While the rooms are rather small and ordinary for the price, those at the more expensive end have views of Sakurajima. You also get the benefit of a restaurant, coffee shop and bar among other facilities. Price: ¥10000-15000
