Hakata Machiya Furusato-kan
The traditional whitewashed walls and grey roofs of Hakata Machiya Furusato-kan evokes the Hakata of the late nineteenth century. In the first two buildings you'll find a crafts shop and then a weaver's workshop, with a soaring roof space, where craftsmen demonstrate traditional Hakata-ori silk weaving on aged looms. The last block houses a museum (¥200), enlivened with plenty of scale models, reconstructed interiors and good coverage of Hakata's many festivities, including a twenty-minute video of the Gion Yamakasa festival (regular shows 10am–5pm). Opening time: Daily 10am–6pm
