Kyūshū

Fukuoka Tower

The 234-metre, pencil-thin Fukuoka Tower has become one of the city's most famous icons. The closest subway station is Nishijin, about fifteen minutes' walk to the south, or you can catch city bus #305 from Hakata and Tenjin, which stops right outside. Primarily a communications tower, its first section is an empty shell coated with 8000 sheets of mirror glass, while the top third bristles with radio transmitters. In between, at 123m, the architects slipped in an observation deck (daily: April– Sept 9.30am–10pm; Oct– March 9.30am–9pm; ¥800) to capitalize on the spectacular views of Fukuoka and Hakata Bay.
