    1 Author Pick Alohana 2F, 1-11-4 Daimyō 092/724-0111 There's scarcely a floral shirt in sight in this contemporary, Hawaiian-owned restaurant in the thick of Daimyō. The Japanese– Hawaiian menu includes Huli-Huli barbecue chicken, loco moco (Hawaiian hamburger with egg, gravy and rice) and a great, crispy pork quesadilla – very more-ish. Wash it down with Kona beer or their original Jack Jackson Malibu coconut cocktail. Reservations recommended at weekends.     2 Chikae 2-2-17 Daimyō 092/721-4624 www.chikae.co.jp Famous fish restaurant where you sit at a counter overlooking the fish tanks, or at tables to the side. Kimono-clad staff bustle about bearing platters laden with ultra-fresh sashimi and sushi add to the spectacle. It's a good place to try the local speciality Karashi mentaiko (spicy fish eggs), as well as fugu. Price: Sashimi platters start at around ¥2000, sushi at ¥2700 Opening time: Daily 11am–10pm

    3 Ichiran B1, Theatre Building, Canal City 1-2-22 Sumiyoshi Fun fast-food outlet specializing in tonkotsu ramen, with branches all over the city. Choose what you want at the vending machine (there are photos to help), then take a seat at the individual booths inside and press the button. Someone will push a form through the hatch (ask for one in English) on which you mark your preferences – how much chilli and garlic, how well cooked the noodles are, etc. Price: A basic ramen costs ¥780 Opening time: Daily 10am– midnight

    4 Nanak 2F, 1-1-4 Maizuru www.nanak.jp On the corner of Showa-dōri and Oyafukō-dōri, this branch of the reliable, long-established Indian chain offers excellent-value lunchtime sets and reasonable evening menus. Outside of these special deals, count on around ¥2000 per head. Opening time: Mon– Fri 11am–5.30pm, Sat & Sun 11am–10.30pm

    5 No-no-Budō 13F, IMS Building, 1-7-11 Tenjin Popular and child-friendly buffet restaurant offering a good choice of salads, fresh veggies and hot dishes – both Japanese and international. Price: Lunch costs around ¥1600 and dinner ¥2100 Opening time: Daily 11am–4pm & 5–11pm; closed 3rd Tues of month

    6 Author Pick Pik's Coffee Shop 3-2-18 Tenjin Ketchup bottles and Coors signs set the tone in this cheap-and-cheerful American diner just off Oyafukō-dōri serving eggs over-easy, hash browns, apple pie and similar comfort foods. Opening time: Mon– Fri 4pm–3am, Sat 6pm–3am

    7 Raumen Stadium 5F, Cinema Building, Canal City, 1-2-22 Sumiyoshi Ramen addicts can take their pick from eight ramen restaurants here, each representing a different region of Japan, from Hokkaido to Miyazaki. Buy a ticket at the vending machine and present it to the staff. Price: Prices start at ¥600 Opening time: Daily 11am–11pm

    8 Ume-no-hana B2, ACROS Building, 1-1-1 Tenjin 092/725-9022 www.umenohana.co.jp Popular chain restaurant specializing in melt-in-the mouth tofu creations. Try their yudōfu set lunch (¥1600), where you boil the tofu at the table, then eat it with grated ginger and a sprinkling of ground sesame, accompanied by all sorts of other delicacies. Price: Dinner sets start at ¥2400 Opening time: Daily 11am–2.30pm & 5–9pm

    9 Uosue 2-1-30 Daimyō 092/713-7931 Small, traditional sashimi restaurant famous for having the freshest fish in town. Menus change daily and you should expect to pay at least ¥3000 for a satisfying meal – stick to items with a price tag (indicating the day's market price) to avoid any nasty shocks. Even on weekdays it pays to make a reservation, or get here at 6pm. Opening time: Tues– Sun 6pm to late
