Canal City

The weird and wonderful multicoloured blocks of Canal City, a showpiece urban renewal project inaugurated in 1996, lies near the southernmost point of Nakasu, the entertainment district. Apart from two large hotels, a major theatre and a thirteen-screen cinema with seating for nearly 2600, the complex also houses shopping arcades and a host of bars and restaurants. The liveliest part, however, is the interior court, where the pink, purple and blue buildings wrap round the "canal", which erupts on the hour with five-storey-high jets of water. www.canalcity.co.jp
