6 Grand Hyatt Fukuoka 1-2-82 Sumiyoshi 092/282-1234 fukuoka.grand.hyatt.com Fukuoka's top hotel occupies a large chunk of Canal City, between Hakata Station and the Nakasu nightlife district. The understated entrance opens into an oval-shaped lobby and a plunging atrium looking out over fountains. The big, beautifully designed rooms incorporate Japanese touches, such as shōji screens and contemporary artwork, and have huge bathrooms. Price: ¥40000 and above
7 Hakata Riverside Hotel 4-213 Kamikawabata-machi 092/291-1455 home.att.ne.jp/orange/rsh/main01.htm Welcoming and well-run budget hotel with its entrance on the Kami-Kawabata shopping arcade. Rooms are a reasonable size, all en suite, and some offer river views. There's a discount for international guests and free Internet access. The only downside is the 2am curfew. Price: ¥3000–7000
8 JAL Resort Sea Hawk Hotel 2-2-3 Jigyohama 092/844-8111 www.hawkstown.com/eng/index.html Japan's second biggest hotel, out near Momochi Seaside Park. Most of the 1052 spacious rooms overlook Hakata Bay, including sea-view Jacuzzis at the luxury end. The hotel has sixteen bars and restaurants, while baseball enthusiasts can walk next door to the Fukuoka Dome. Price: ¥15000-20000

The 27 tatami rooms are elegant, with antique screens and wall-hangings, though none are en suite. Rooms are available with or without meals. There's free Internet access and English is spoken.
