Leather and wood fittings lend an old-fashioned air to the lobby and restaurant, but the rooms are modern, spacious and elegantly decorated. Price: ¥20000-30000

Ino's Place 4-6-5 3jo, Higashi-Sapporo, Shiroishi 011/832-1828 www.inos-place.com Spruce and friendly backpackers' hostel near Shiroishi subway station, five stops out from Sapporo Station on the Tozai line. The smaller dorms can be booked as private rooms (sleeping up to 4) for an additional fee. There's a clean, well-equipped kitchen and a pleasant lounge. Check their website for a detailed map and instructions on how to get there. ¥3400– ¥4800
4 JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo Kita 5, Nishi 2 011/251-222 www.jrhotels.co.jp Dazzling views are guaranteed from the smallish rooms and the 35th-floor bar and restaurant of this luxury hotel, which occupies the top dozen floors of the JR Tower atop Sapporo Station. Facilities include Sky Resort Spa Pulan Bulan (¥1500 for guests, ¥2800 for day visitors) on the 22nd floor which has real onsen water pumped in. Rates are reduced by twenty percent if you have a JR rail card. Price: ¥20000-30000

Even so, facilities are good, including a swimming pool, gym, sauna and several restaurants; service is faultless. Price: ¥20000-30000

It has a quirky charm and there's a fancy spa on the fourteenth floor (guests/non-guests ¥1515/2725). Price: ¥30000-40000

Pleasant but unspectacular rooms have all the conveniences you'd expect in this price range. Check out the striking fresco of Hokkaidō cranes by French artist Bernard Buffet in the ground-floor café. The atmosphere is relaxed and there's no curfew, though the manager likes to be notified if you plan to check in after 6pm. Part of the Toho group. Price: ¥3500
