    1 Club Mago 2-1-9 Shin-Sakae, Naka-ku 052/243-1818 Big name DJs front up at this friendly and nicely decorated club, which also hosts a recovery party every Sun from 5am (with free coffee). The same building is home to the live house venues Diamond Hall and Apollo Theatre ( www.diamond-hall.com ).

    2 iD Café 3-1-15 Sakae, Naka-ku 052/251-0382 www.idcafe.info Psychedelic flowers decorate this funky multi-level bar and club. The ¥1000 entrance gets you two tokens that can be used for food or drinks. Opening time: Wed– Sun 7pm– midnight

    3 Metro www.nagoyametroclub.com The fabulous Madame Matty hosts Nagoya's only gaijin-friendly gay and lesbian club event, a guaranteed fun time for all – it's held every second Sat of the month at Club Wall in Sakae; check the website for details. Price: Entry ¥2500 including two drinks

    4 Misfits 4-10-16 Imaike, Chikusa-ku 052/733-7525 Convivial bar justly popular with both the foreign community and young Japanese, and the food's not bad either, particularly the big salads. On the third floor of a building around the corner from exit 4 of Imaike station.

    5 Plastic Factory 32-13 Kanda-chō, Chikusa-ku 052/723-9971 www.plasticfactory.jp Nagoya's most happening club space hosts an eclectic range of events in – guess what? – an old plastic factory, three blocks north of Imaike station. Expect anything from progressive techno to live rock.

    6 Tokuzo 2F, Blue Star Bldg, 1-6-8 Imaike, Chikusa-ku 052/733-3709 Hip bar that's another good reason to head out to Imaike in the evening. Live music most nights.

    7 Underground 4-3-15 Sakae 052/242-1388 This stalwart of the Nagoya club scene is on the third and fourth floors of a corner building – look for the London Underground symbol.
