Getting around
The easiest way to get around is on the subway; the four lines you'll use the most are: Higashiyama (coloured yellow on the subway map), Meijō (purple), Sakura-dōri (red) and Tsurumai (blue). Both the Sakura-dōri and Higashiyama lines connect with the train stations. The extensive bus system is also handy, but it's not as gaijin-friendly as the subways, which have everything labelled in English. Single journeys by subway or bus around the city centre cost ¥200; if you plan to travel a lot, consider buying one of the day tickets (¥740 for subways only, ¥600 for buses only, ¥850 for subways and buses). There's also the Weekend Eco Pass (¥600), a one-day pass valid on buses and subways and available on weekends, national holidays and the 8th day of each month. If you're going to be travelling around the city for a longer period, consider investing in the Yurika pre-paid card, valid on subways, buses and some Meitetsu trains and buses.
