35-2251 Set in a whitewashed house and Meiji-era wooden building on the banks of the Metoba River. This small ryokan has an appealing mix of old and modern Japan, with tatami rooms, a wooden bath, a small enclosed bamboo garden and a charming c café . Rates include breakfast. Price: ¥10000-15000
4 Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu 4-8-9 ōte 0263/32-0114 www.mcci.or.jp/www/kagetsu Although it's showing some wear and tear, this handsome old-fashioned hotel, close to the castle, has some stylish touches and makes use of the local dark-wood furniture. The tatami rooms are good and the same price as the Western-style ones. Price: ¥10000-15000

The tiny unit bathrooms in each room are compensated for by the excellent top floor public baths and, for men-only, sauna. On the ground floor, their lively izakaya serves traditional local dishes including basashi (raw horsemeat). Price: ¥10000-15000
