Practicalities
The Keiō line from Shinjuku provides the simplest and cheapest way of reaching the terminus of Takao-san-guchi (1hr; ¥370). If you take the slower and far more expensive JR Chūō line, you'll need to change to the Keiō line at Takao to go one last stop to Takao-san-guchi.
At the bottom of the mountain is the delightful 
Ukai Toriyama (Mon– Fri 11am–9.30pm, Sat 11am–8pm, Sun 11am–7pm;

www.ukai.co.jp/toriyama ), a traditional restaurant in a sylvan setting specializing in charcoal-broiled chicken and Hida beef; meals are served by kimono-clad waitresses in small tatami rooms.
