The Sunderbans
South of Kolkata down to the coast, the Hooghly fringes an enormous estuarine delta, the Sunderbans, a 10,000-square-kilometre expanse of marshland, mangrove swamp and islets formed by silt swept down from the Himalayas. Its most southerly and remote districts have been designated a nature reserve to protect abundant wildlife that includes saltwater crocodiles, Gangetic dolphins, otters and the world's largest population of tigers. .
