1 Bharat Subhash Marg by the junction with Station Rd, Charbagh Cheap dhaba opposite the station serving good dosas and curries (veg Rs35–60, non-veg Rs40–160).
2 Chowdray MG Marg, Hazratganj Excellent Lucknavi cuisine in a busy restaurant (main dishes Rs38–70); locals say that this is the place to come to for lunch.
3 India Coffee House Ashoka Marg Once a hotbed of Lucknow's political intelligentsia, nicknamed the "maternity ward" for the ideas to which it gave birth, now so run-down it looks like a squatted warehouse, it still serves filter coffee and cheap South Indian and breakfast snacks.
4 Jone Hing MG Marg, Hazratganj Chinese restaurant serving the usual sweet and sour, chop suey and chow mein, plus specialities such as ginger chicken and Manchurian fish. Main dishes are Rs60–75 for meat, Rs105 for fish, Rs195 for prawns.
5 Moti Mahal MG Marg, Hazratganj The sweet shop at the front has some great milky confections, including sugar-free ones; the family restaurant upstairs serves excellent veg curries (Rs50–110), including three types of dum aloo (Lucknavi, Banarsi or Kashmiri).
6 Namshijaan China Gate One of several open-air diners in this little street by UP Press Club, with kebabs, tandoori chicken, biriyanis, and local specialities such as chicken dum pukht. Main dishes Rs40–120.
7 Nawab's Capoor's hotel, MG Marg, Hazratganj A refined eatery, with live qawwali music in the evening (except Tues). Top dishes include murg nawabi, a mild, creamy dish of chicken in cashew butter, or there's a great mushroom tikka masala. Non-veg main dishes are Rs100–250.
8 Royal Café Shahmajaf Rd Lively place that's popular among Lucknavi families. Muglai non-veg main dishes go for Rs90–160, handi dum biriyanis at Rs105–135.

Tanday Kababi Naaz Cinema Rd, just off Aminabad main chowk For an authentic Avadhi gastronomic experience, head to this popular cheap eatery, the best in a street of them, where the tandoori chicken, and mutton or (shock horror!) beef kebabs are prepared out front and served up within. Main dishes Rs30–60.
