3 Carlton Shah Najaf Rd 0522/222 4021 Fabled Lucknow address, a fin-de-siècle Euro– Avadhi edifice with big rooms, ancient plumbing and musty hunting trophies. It was getting run-down, but was closed at last check for total refurbishment, so should emerge all spanking new. Price: Rs3001-5000

The attached doubles (hot water in buckets) aren't really as cheap as they ought to be, but it's very central, and there are non-attached singles for only Rs120. Price: Rs301–1000
