3 Nova SS Rd, Fancy Bazaar 0361/251 1464 A solid, if unremarkable, option, and a welcome respite from chaotic Fancy Bazaar; rooms are clean and spacious, if a little drab. Price: Rs1001-1500
4 Pragati Manor GS Rd, 500m south of Bharalu River 0361/234 1261 www.pragatimanor.com The best upmarket hotel in the city, even though it's a bit of a trek from the centre. The shimmering gold exterior houses swanky, modern attached rooms with red lamps and tribal paintings. There's also a good restaurant and travel desk. Price: Rs1501–5000
5 Raj Mahal AT Rd, Paltan Bazaar 0361/254 9141 www.rajmahalhotel.com Big hotel with bright, well-appointed but somewhat characterless rooms – the "deluxe" attached rooms are well worth the extra Rs100–200. There's a slightly grubby pool. Price: Rs1501–3000
6 Siroy Lily Solapara Rd, Paltan Bazaar 0361/260 8492 www.hotelsiroylily.com A cut above the others in its price bracket, Siroy Lily has cosy, turquoise-coloured, attached rooms with reliable hot water, smart service and complimentary breakfast – some bathrooms, however, suffer from damp. 9 Tourist Lodge Station Rd 0361/254 4475 Assam Tourism's friendly green-and-white hotel has a muzak-playing lift and decent, if dowdy, standard rooms, as well as smarter a/c attached rooms with TVs. Price: Rs301–1000
