Arrival

Trichy's airport, 8km south of the centre, has daily flights to and from Chennai, several weekly to Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode, as well as frequent services to Sri Lanka and the Gulf states. The journey into town, by taxi (Rs200) or bus (#7, #28, #59, #63 or #K1) takes less than half an hour. For airport enquiries and bookings go to Indian Airlines, 4-A Dindigul Rd ( 0431/248 0233), or any agent for Air Deccan and the international airlines.

Trichy's main railway station, Trichy Junction – which has given its name to the southern district of town – provides frequent rail links with Chennai, Madurai and the eastern coastline. From here you're within easy reach of most hotels, restaurants and banks, as well as the bus stands. There are two stands – Central and State Express – close to each other, but no fixed rules about where a particular bus will depart from, though private buses mainly use the Central stand. State Express buses run frequently to major towns such as Madurai, Kodaikanal and Puducherry, right around the clock. The efficient local city service (#1) that leaves from the platform on Rockins Road, opposite the Shree Krishna restaurant, is the most convenient way of getting to the Rock Fort, the temples and Srirangam. Auto-rickshaws are also widely available.
