The whole place has a certain faded charm, although some of the rooms (doubles with a/c, singles with fan) are decidedly drab, and the in-house cafeteria looks like it should be in a hospital.     3 Author Pick Diggi Palace SMS Hospital Rd 0141/237 3091 www.hoteldiggipalace.com One of the city's best-value heritage hotels, occupying a characterful old haveli set amid attractive gardens in a conveniently central location. The more expensive rooms (with a/c) are nicely furnished. The budget rooms (air-cooled) are smaller and plainer, though reasonable value when you factor in the atmospheric setting. Price: Rs501–3000

    4 Jaipur Inn Shiv Marg, Bani Park 0141/220 1121 www.jaipurinn.com One of the oldest places in town, much improved following recent refurbishments, with comfortable and nicely furnished rooms with TV and a/c – it's still relatively expensive, though you may be able to wangle a discount if you opt to do without a/c.     6 Madhuban D-237 Behari Marg, Bani Park 0141/220 0033 www.madhuban.net Less imposing than the city's other heritage hotels (it's more of an overgrown suburban villa than a genuine palace), though better-value than most, and with plenty of quaint Rajput decorative touches and attractively furnished rooms, plus a pleasant garden and small pool round the back.Price: Rs1001–5000

The well-drilled staff can take care of all your needs, plus there's a handy in-house 24hr money exchange and an excellent rooftop restaurant. Usually fills up early, so advance bookings recommended. The spacious and spotless modern rooms (air-cooled and a/c) are a bargain, there's a choice of garden and rooftop restaurants, and the two friendly brothers who run the place provide outstanding service. Advance bookings recommended. Price: Rs301–1000

Rooms (all a/c) are spacious and cool, and there's also a pool, Wi-Fi in the lobby and a rooftop restaurant. Price: Rs1501–5000

    10 Umaid Mahal C-20/B-2 Bihari Marg, Bani Park 0141/220 1952 www.umaidmahal.com Extravagantly decorated place centred around a pretty little arcaded atrium, with virtually every surface covered in traditional murals. The spacious a/c rooms are nicely furnished with antique-style wooden furniture. There's also Wi-Fi access and a basement pool and bar. Price: Rs1501–3000

    11 Alsisar Haveli Sansar Chandra Rd 0141/236 8290 www.alsisar.com An unexpectedly upmarket haven in a ramshackle part of town, occupying a large and immaculately modernized century-old haveli. It's not the most atmospheric heritage hotel in Jaipur, though it's comfy and well-run, and the pool (non-guests Rs100/hr) is one of the prettiest in town. Price: Rs3001-5000

    12 Bissau Palace Khetri House Rd 0141/230 4371 www.bissaupalace.com Tucked away in a down-at-heel part of town, this attractive heritage hotel is less flash than others in Jaipur but has plenty of old-world atmosphere, especially the gorgeous Sheesh Mahal and the antique library; modern facilities include a decent-sized pool and a Jacuzzi. Price: Rs2001–5000; fifty percent discounts in summer.

    13 Jai Mahal Jacob Rd, Civil Lines 0141/222 3636 www.tajhotels.com One of the smartest addresses in the city, this palatial former residence of the Jaipur state PM offers a genuine taste of Rajput splendour, with rambling red and yellow buildings set around beautiful gardens and elegantly furnished rooms (from around $390). Facilities include a spa, pool (guests only), and yoga sessions. Price: Rs5001 and above

    16 Raj Mahal Palace Sardar Patel Marg 0141/510 5666 www.royalfamilyjaipur.com This former palace of Jai Singh's favourite maharani has plenty of period charm, with a grand old banqueting hall, wood-panelled library and spacious lawns, plus a medium-size pool (non-guests Rs150). Rooms (all a/c) are large and old-fashioned and a bit past their best, but still decent value at current rates. Price: Rs3001-5000

    17 Rajvilas Goner Rd, 7km from the city centre 0141/268 0101 www.oberoihotels.com This dreamy resort occupies a superb fake Rajasthani fort-style complex beautifully landscaped with pools and pavilions. Accommodation is either in delectable creamy rooms (US$750) with private ornamental gardens or in luxury a/c tents (US$870) with Burmese teak floors. There are all the mod cons and facilities you'd expect at this price, including a beautiful spa. Price: Rs5001 and above

    18 Author Pick Rambagh Palace Bhawani Singh Marg 0141/221 1919 www.tajhotels.com This opulent palace complex, set amid 47 acres of beautiful gardens, is indisputably the grandest hotel in Jaipur, and one of the most romantic places to stay in India, with superbly equipped rooms featuring Rajasthani artworks, reproduction antique furniture and all mod-cons. Even if you can't afford to stay, call in for tea (from around Rs300). Doubles from around US$530.Price: Rs5001 and above

    19 Author Pick Samode Haveli Gangapole 0141/263 2407 www.samode.com In an unbeatably central location on the northeastern edge of the Pink City, this superb old haveli is brimful of atmosphere, centred on an idyllic central courtyard and with the prettiest pool in town (guests only). Rooms are a mishmash: some are functional, modern and fairly characterless; others are pure museum pieces; and others are a bit of both – ask to see several before you make a choice. Rooms from around US$190. Price: Rs5001 and above; rates can fall by up to forty percent in summer (May– Sept)

    21 Author Pick Samode Palace Samode, 42km northwest of Jaipur 01423/240014 www.samode.com Impeccably restored eighteenth-century palace, hidden among the scrubby Aravalli Hills on the edge of Shekhawati, that's now an award-winning heritage hotel. If your budget can stretch to it, spend a night in one of the palace's uncompromisingly romantic rooms, plastered with murals and filled with antiques and ornate stonework. The beautiful Sheesh Mahal is on the south side of the building, while three hundred steps lead up to a hilltop fort, with impressive views. The same owners also have fifty richly appointed tents, 3km southeast at Samode Bagh, with their own swimming pool.Price: tents and rooms Rs5001 and above; rates drop by 30 percent May– Sept
