Eating

German Bakery 291 Koregaon Park One of the oldest branches of this chain of faded hippy cafés, providing light meals and heavy pastry snacks and breads, to a mixed clientele of cellphone-wielding, cigarette-smoking students and clean-living ashram-ites.

Juice World 2436/B East Street Camp Freshly squeezed fruit juices (Rs25–40) and shakes (try the fabulous dried fruit and badam) are the mainstay of this central Mumbai-style place just east of the top of MG Rd. They also serve piping-hot snacks such as aloo paratha and, throughout the afternoon and evening, tangy Bombay-style pao bhaji, which bubbles away on a huge counter griddle.

Koyla Mira Nagar Corner, North Main Rd, Koregaon Park 020/2612 0102 Pune's most extravagantly decorated restaurant, featuring twinkling, mirror-inlaid Arabian Nights murals. The waiters sport long Muslim djellabas and fez caps, and serve Hyderabadi cuisine as sumptuous as the surroundings: complicated, creamy curries and huge, slow-baked biriyanis, rounded off with traditional saffron, cardamom and pistachio-accented desserts. Reservation recommended on weekends. Price: Rs750–900 for three courses

The Place (Touche the Sizzler) 7 Moledina Rd Succulent sizzlers (veg, fish, pork or beef) and door-stopper steaks, dished up with huge piles of perfect fries and salad, are the house specialities of this popular Parsi-run restaurant in the city centre. Price: Mains Rs200–300

Ram Krishna 6 Moledina Rd, opposite West End Theatre Top-notch North and south Indian veg food, including some fantastic Punjabi tandooris, dished up in a high-ceilinged dining hall with black-tie service, but at restrained prices. Price: Most mains Rs70–150 Opening time: Daily 9am–11.15pm

Swiss Cheese Garden ABC Farms, Koregaon Park From Fri– Sun you'll be lucky to get a table at this quirky Swiss-themed place. Against a backdrop of warm red brickwork and pretty glass mosaic lanterns, or out in a garden wrapped in fairy lights, you can enjoy scrumptious rösti potatoes, fondues (Rs425–600 depending on ingredients), raclettes (Rs450) and wood-baked pizzas (Rs125–250).

Yogi Tree Ground floor, Hotel Surya Villa, 284/1 Koregaon Park This is the favourite hang-out of health-conscious ashram-ites, serving pure, hygienic juices, grilled sandwiches, tofu steaks (Rs150) and delicious koftas (Rs100), in addition to a very popular stir-fried pak choi (Rs150). And their desserts are great too.
