2 Grand MG Rd, near Dr Ambedkar statue at the top of MG Rd 020/2636 0728 The colonial-era Grand, set behind a dimly lit beer garden, used to be most budget travellers' first choice, but it's gone drastically downhill in recent years. Despite the decrepit plumbing and overall shabbiness, the doubles in the rear annexe are bearable for a night or two, but forget the stinky wood-partitioned, bathroom-less singles off reception. The rooms are all clean, have attached bathrooms and small balconies. Discounts for stays of more than two days. Price: Rs301–1000

It's tucked away down a hidden backstreet a stone's throw from the railway station, but easy to find and offers superb value by Pune standards. Price: Rs2001-3000
