Getting around

Most of Aurangabad's sights lie too far apart to take in on foot. The city is, however, buzzing with auto-rickshaws, which, on the whole, will happily flag their meters; longer sightseeing trips work out much cheaper if you settle on a fare in advance (usually Rs500–600). Taxis can be hailed in the street or found at the railway station and cars with drivers can be hired through travel agents such as the efficient Classic Travel ( 0240/233 5598, www.aurangabadtours.com ), opposite MTDC's Holiday Resort on Station Road East. Expect to pay Rs1000–2000 (depending on the size and comfort of the car) for an eight-hour day with an additional overnight charge of around Rs200.

Much the cheapest and most satisfying way to get around the city, however, is by bicycle. While the busy main streets and market can be hair-raising at times, a ride out to the sights in the north of town makes an enjoyable alternative to public transport. Two stalls just north of the bus stand have the best bikes (Rs5/hr), and there's another near the railway station.
