Eating

Food Lovers Station Rd East, opposite MTDC office A kitsch wonderland of bamboo, plastic waterfalls and fish tanks – all illuminated by candles – with a non-seedy bar. The mid-price Indian and Manchurian food is consistently tasty, making this a popular choice among travellers. Price: Most mains Rs75–250

Prasanth Siddharth Arcade, Station Rd East, opposite MTDC office A cheaper alternative to nearby Food Lovers, serving exclusively vegetarian dishes (mainly Punjabi and Chinese), indoors or on an external terrace, against a barage of filmi music and coloured lights. The food's freshly prepared and inexpensive, though the service can be slow.

Author Pick Tandoor Shyam Chambers, Station Rd East 0240/232 8481 Upmarket a/c bar/restaurant, dominated by an imposing bust of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamen, but offering some of the city's most delectable non-veg Mughlai food. Tandoori chicken and mutton kebabs are the house specialities, while for monster appetites there's the full-on "sizzling tandoori platter" (Rs475 and copious enough for two). Price: Mains Rs80–225

Thaliwala's Bhoj Opposite Hotel Kartiki, Dr Ambedkhar Rd An old favourite, pure-veg restaurant renowned for its meticulously prepared, good-value Rajasthani and Gujarati thalis. Price: Rs75
