Accommodation
1 Ashray 77 Devas Rd
0734/251 9301
www.hotelashray.com Respectable mid-range choice: rooms have plenty of space, unimaginative brown carpets and cable TV. The more expensive ones are cavernous and boast fridges and bathtubs. The Angan restaurant is recommended. Price: Rs301–1500
2 Atlas Station Rd (Subhash Marg), Indore Gate
0734/256 0473 While the hotel's hyperbole about "deluxe" rooms is wide of the mark, the slightly kitsch rooms are fairly priced and come with reasonably clean pink bathrooms. The amiable management is very open to bargaining. Price: Rs301–1000
3 Avantika Off Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg
0734/251 1398
avantika@mptourism.com This MP Tourism-run hotel has an institutional feel and is let down by its location 2km out of town, near the bus station for Mandu. The best bet for budget travellers is the partitioned dorm (Rs90), which has comfortable beds and clean sheets; the four private rooms are overpriced, but it holds a good restaurant. Price: Rs501-1000
4 Grand Tower Vikram Marg
0734/255 3699
hotelgrandtower@sancharnet.com This well-run lime-green hotel has comforting but bland en suites with pale wood fittings and firm mattresses, and a decent restaurant, Zarokha. Price: Rs501–1500
5 Rama Krishna Station Rd (Subhash Marg), opposite the railway station
0734/255 3017 A notch above the other flophouses in the station area; the large but tired rooms have attached bathrooms with hot water. But while the rooms themselves are pretty clean, the bedding is not. Look out for the large "RK" sign on the roof, as it's easy to miss the entrance. Price: Rs301-500
6
Shipra Residency University Rd
0734/255 1495
shirpa@mptourism.com A tranquil, white-tiled courtyard with distinct Moorish influences is the centrepiece of MP Tourism's fine hotel, around which are charming en suites with fancily-quilted bed clothes. Home to the good Nauratan restaurant. Complimentary breakfast and noon checkout provide the icing on the cake. Price: Rs1001-1500
