Accommodation

Casa di William Just off Main Rd 07686/274244 hotelcasediwilliam@hotmail.com An easygoing establishment with a handful of keenly priced spick-and-span en suites: perfectly decent, but on the whole a little uninspiring. Price: Rs301-500

Chandela Airport Rd 07686/272355 www.tajhotels.com Sophisticated en-suite cottages (US$95–150) in eleven acres of neatly tended gardens, with all the hallmarks of the Taj Group: mini-golf, tennis and croquet, fitness centre, pool (Rs300 for non-guests), coffee shop, bar and two restaurants. Price: Rs3001 and above

Author Pick Grand Temple View Main Rd 07686/272111 www.thegrandhotels.net . If money is no object, this is the place to stay. Sumptuous rooms (from US$330) look out onto an enticing curvy pool and shaded groves of mahua trees. The spa treatments, however, are the real selling point, and include yoga, Ayurvedic and Thai massage, reflexology and meditation. Just make sure you squeeze in a visit to the temples as well. Price: Rs5001 and above

Harmony Jain Temples Rd 07686/274135 www.hotelharmonyonline.com The Mediterranean influence in the design lends an air of spaciousness to this hotel, which has a range of budget and mid-range rooms – each one airy and surgically clean – and a bird-filled courtyard. You can even sample "cornflakes and foot curd" at the restaurant. Price: Rs201–1500

Jhankar By-Pass Rd 07686/274063 jhankar@mptourism.com Away from the tourist and tout scrum near the Western Group, this gleaming MP Tourism hotel is justifiably popular, particularly with Indian tourists. En-suite a/c doubles come with free breakfast, and the cubby-hole bar has a 20-percent-off happy hour (3–7pm). Price: Rs1001-1500

Payal Across the fields northeast of the centre 07686/274064 payal@mptourism.com MP Tourism's cheaper option has drab standard rooms and better a/c doubles, with verandas opening out onto pleasant gardens. The adjacent campsite can be booked through reception. Price: Rs501–1500

Siddharth Opposite the Western Group 07686/274627 hotelsiddharth@rediffmail.com A respectable mid-range choice with amiable staff and appealing rooms, although the decor could do with a little jazzing up. The a/c deluxe double has wonderful temple views and the restaurant produces some of the best Indian food in town. Price: Rs501–1500

Surya Jain Temples Rd 07686/274145 www.hotelsuryakhajuraho.com This efficiently run hotel has forty immaculate, variously priced rooms, a lush garden, yoga and massage sessions, and an alfresco eating area. Price: Under Rs1000

Yogi Lodge In a cul-de-sac between the row of shops behind Raja Café 07686/274158 yogi_sharm@yahoo.com While the pinkish rooms with attached bathrooms are somewhat austere, you can't argue with the price, particularly as it includes free yoga and meditation sessions. Price: Under Rs200

Zen Jain Temples Rd 07686/274228 oshozen62@hotmail.com Good-value rooms around a peaceful Zen-influenced garden, complete with lotus pond. The pricier options are bigger and have more extravagant colour schemes. Bear in mind that if the owner asks you to join him for food in his home, you will be expected to pay. Price: Rs201–1500
