3 D.M. Near the state bus stand 0751/234 2083 Miniscule but clean and quiet rooms; the cheaper ones have squat toilets. The ancient TVs are locked inside glass and wood cabinets, lest you were thinking of pinching one. Price: Rs301–1000
4 India Station Rd 0751/234 1983 Very popular no-frills lodge run by the Indian Coffee Workers' Co-op. Clean, but the rooms overlook the noisy main street and only deluxe units have western toilets. Price: Rs201–1000
5 Landmark Manik Vilas 0751/401 1271, www.hotellandmarkgwalior.com The 42 centrally a/c rooms are comfortable, but are let down by their dull brown decor. There's a 24-hour coffee shop, restaurant and bar. Price: Rs1501-2000

Charming deluxe rooms (US$150–200) have Indian-style divans, 1930s furniture and silk cushions. There's a pool and spa, and cookery, yoga and aerobic classes are available. Price: Rs5001 and above
