    1 Amdo Main Bazaar Popular Tibetan restaurant, with freshly prepared food that is generally excellent but can take up to an hour to appear. A second Amdo across the street catches the morning sun and serves hearty tsampa porridge. Price: Main courses Rs50–80

    2 Author Pick Café Jeevan Changspa Lane Modern pure-veg Sikh-run restaurant featuring a variety of cuisines. Lovely decor both downstairs and in the partially enclosed roof terrace. Price: Rs60–100

    3 Dreamland Fort Rd, near the hotel of the same name One of the most popular late-night haunts in town for a mixed menu of food and beer. The chicken platter (Rs120) is recommended.

    4 Food Affair Main Bazaar A great outdoor café on the square with a mix of baked and cooked food. It's especially good for breakfast and snacky lunches. Price: Around Rs50

    5 Leh View Restaurant Main Bazaar The best 360-degree views in town from the roof terrace is offset by painfully slow service, making this a better bet for a drink than a meal.

    6 Mentokling Changspa Lane, near Mission School. One of the best of the garden cafés along this road, with a fine all-round menu that's especially strong on Indian food. Price: Dinners Rs80–120

    7 Penguin Garden Restaurant Old Rd, just off Fort Rd A great place for a beer, German Bakery snacks or a meal in a leafy garden location. Price: Meals around Rs80–100

    8 Pizza de Hut Main Bazaar, almost opposite SBI Good for breakfast or for a beer in the evenings, with a great rooftop location in the centre of town. The mixed menu includes wood-fired pizzas and tandoor dishes (Rs100–150).

    9 Author Pick Shelden Garden Restaurant Changspa Lane Specializes in succulent barbecued meat and fish for around Rs150, served in a pleasant courtyard or in a tent where a nightly DVD is shown.

    10 Author Pick Tibetan Kitchen Down alley off Fort Rd Considered by many, locals and visitors alike, to be the best Tibetan food in town. Great mutton thukpas for Rs60. Large parties are advised to book.

    11 Zen Garden Changspa Lane Seasonal, open-air restaurant with a barbecue under willow trees. Varied menu of Indian, Chinese and Western food, including pasta and Israeli dishes.
