Decent-sized rooms, lounges, verandas, a croquet lawn and well-stocked library. All profits go to charities and environmental projects, and their auto-rickshaw will pick you up with prior arrangement. Early bookings recommended. Price: Rs2001 and above

Now it's a Raj-style fantasy, decked with stunning period furniture and popular with tour groups. Rooms range from turret rooms ($200) to the "Viceroy Suite" ($900). The tea lounge, restaurant and pool are open to nonresidents (Rs150). Price: Rs5001 and above

Parklane 2720 Sri Harsha Rd 0821/243 0400. A complete overhaul has transformed the Parklane into a swish yet affordable boutique hotel. Appealingly misshapen rooms, all with balconies and contemporary furnishings, encircle a skylit atrium. Two excellent restaurants vie for diners – one thick with tree branches on the first floor and another on the roof, with a plunge pool, full bar and fine views of Chamundi; both offer live music nightly, usually tabla and flute. This delightful apartment homestay in a tranquil neighbourhood offers an Indian twist on the B&B experience. Bright blues and cosy creams dominate the mostly wood furnishings, and you can enjoy delightful mornings and evenings on the rooftop patio. Divya is a welcoming hostess and, along with her sister, an excellent cook. Must reserve in advance; they will pick up from train station or bus stand. Price: Rs301-500
