Arrival
Buses from Hospet terminate close to where the road joins the main street in Hampi Bazaar, halfway along its dusty length. A little further towards the Virupaksha temple, the tourist office (daily except Fri 10am–5.30pm;
08394/241339) can put you in touch with a guide for Rs500 per day but not much else.
Note that whatever you are told, Sneha Travels' Gokarna bus involves a transfer at Ankola in the wee hours. It's better to hop on one of three early-morning express trains from Hospet to Hubli (last one at 8am; 2hr), from where you can catch a bus to Gokarna (5.5hr) or nearby Ankola (4.5hr), saving both time and money.
Rented bicycles are available from stalls near the lodges (Rs5/hr, Rs30–40/day). Pedal bikes can be hard work on the bumpy roads so consider a motorized two-wheeler. The Raju stall, round the corner from the tourist office, has motorbikes and scooters for hire (around Rs150/day).
