Getting around

Until the metro is running in 2011, the easiest way to get around Bangalore is by metered auto-rickshaw; fares start at Rs10 for the first kilometre and Rs5 per kilometre thereafter. Most meters do work and drivers are usually willing to use them, although you will occasionally be asked for a flat fare, especially during rush hour.

Bangalore's extensive bus system radiates from the City (Kempe Gowda) Bus Stand ( 080/222 2542), near the railway station. Most buses from platform 17 travel past MG Road. Along with regular buses, BMTC also operates a deluxe express service, Pushpak, on a number of set routes (#P109 terminates at Whitefield ashram) as well as a handful of night buses. Other important city bus stands include the City Market Bus Stand ( 080/670 2177) to the south of the railway station and Shivaji Nagar ( 080/286 5332) to the north of Cubbon Park – the #P2 Jayanagar service from here is handy for the Lalbagh Botanical Gardens.
