www.hotelgrand.in Neat, clean, convenient and central with rooms around a pleasant garden courtyard, though windows all face inward. There's an adjacent bar decorated with Hollywood movie posters. The friendly manager can organize a share-taxi to Wagha for the border ceremony. Price: Rs501–1500
4 Mohan International Albert Rd 0183/222 7801 www.mohaninternationalhotel.com One of Amritsar's top hotels but overpriced, though it does have a/c, room service, a 24hr coffee shop and a pool. Popular in season (Nov–March) for Punjabi wedding receptions which are colourful but noisy. Rates include breakfast. Price: Rs3001-5000
5 Mrs Bhandari's Guest House 10 Cantonment 0183/222 8509 bhandari_guesthouse.tripod.com Wonderful old-fashioned rooms with wood fires and bathtubs in a colonial home with lawns, gardens and a small swimming pool. "British-style" three-course meals are available but pricey. You can also camp in the grounds. Popular with overlanders, it's become an Amritsar institution, as has the centegenarian Mrs Bhandari. Price: Camping Rs170 per person, rooms Rs1501–3000
6 Pegasus/Palace Opposite the railway station 0183/256 5111 This place has seen better days, but it's conveniently located and reasonably priced. Rooms are attached, with geysers in the pricier ones and bucket hot water in the cheaper ones. Discounts in winter. Price: Rs301–1000
7 Ritz Plaza 45 Mall Rd 0183/256 2836 Low-key but reasonably classy establishment, though it gets mixed reviews, with central a/c, good-sized rooms and a relaxed atmosphere, surrounded by lawns; facilities include a pool, lounge bar, 24hr coffee shop and international restaurant. Wheelchair friendly with an adapted room. Price: Rs3001-5000
8 Sita Niwas 61 Sita Niwas Rd 0183/254 3092 A good-value and popular budget option near Guru Ram Das Niwas and the Golden Temple, with wide range of rooms, most en suite, and 24hr hot water. Price: Rs201–1000
9 Skylark 79 Railway Link Rd 0183/265 2053 One of the better hotels on this street opposite the station; the rooms, if slightly shabby, are huge, with comfortable beds and hot water round the clock. Price: Rs501-1000
10 Tourist Guest House Hide Market, near Bhandari Bridge, GT Rd 0183/255 3830 bubblesgoolry@yahoo.com Popular with budget travellers since the "hippy trail" days, offering a variety of rooms. The cheapest are rather dingy with shared bathrooms; attached ones with hot water are quite nice and still not pricey. Ignore commission-hungry rickshaw-wallahs telling you it's full. Price: Rs201–500
