Delhi
South Delhi
Most of Delhi's early settlements, including its first city at Qila Rai Pithora, lie not in "Old Delhi" but in South Delhi, the vast area south of Lutyens' carefully planned boulevards, where rapid expansion has swallowed up what was previously countryside. The area is littered with monuments from the past. Constructions at either end of Lodi Road, for example, mark two ends of the great tradition of Mughal garden tombs: Humayun's Tomb, its genesis, and Safdarjang's Tomb, its last gasp. Here too, you'll find the remains of six cities that preceded Old Delhi, notably the Qutb Minar and the rambling ruins of Tughluqabad.
