There's also a classy bar, a currency exchange and two top restaurants serving a mouthwatering mix of Indian, Chinese, Mughal and Afghan dishes between them. Price: Rs3001-5000
3 Garden Court Club SP Verma Rd 0612/320 2279 Accessed via an ancient lift, this small hotel in a shopping complex has a handful of neat and tidy rooms with TVs. The best reason to stay, however, is the lovely terrace restaurant. Price: Rs301–1500

5 Maurya Patna Fraser Rd, South Gandhi Maidan 0612/220 3040 www.maurya.com Service can be impersonal at this 5-star, but the luxurious attached room ($150) – decorated in a range of styles, from colonial to oriental – appealing swimming pool (Rs350 for non-guests) and fine eateries more than make up for it. It's particularly popular with tourists from the Far East. Price: Rs5001 and above

Although the rooms are a little stuffy, they're clean and boast multicoloured bedspreads. The management is also a good source of transport information. Price: Rs301–1000
