1 Khawachen 103 Chingdol Xi Lu (on the route of the #2 minibus)
0891/6333255 This government-affiliated and US-financed carpet centre offers the best selection of carpets in Lhasa and the chance to watch them being produced. They can also arrange to ship the merchandise home for you. Available in muted, attractive, traditional designs, plus some with a modern slant, the carpets range from 50 square centimetres (US$25) to 2.7m x 3.6m (US$1300). Opening time: Mon– Sat 9am–6.30pm
2 The Lhasa Carpet Factory Out of town on Chingdol Dong Lu;
0891/6323447 A biggish carpet centre, where you can watch huge carpets being woven; an extensive range of traditional and modern patterns is available here, costing from ¥140 to ¥32,000. Shipping can also be arranged. Opening time: (Mon– Fri 9am–1pm & 3.30–6pm, Sat 9am–1pm
3 Shambhala Jiri Erxiang (right out of the Kirey hotel, then first right) Carpet shop with a selection of on-site crafted rugs and carpets. Can be shipped back home if required.
4 Tibet Traditional Art Gallery Next door to the Ramoche An excellent range of good-quality, hand-painted thangkas (religious scrolls) from ¥3000.
