Food and drink
1 Dunya Beijing Dong Lu Run by a Dutch couple, very civilized but not very Tibetan. A diverse range of specials, good Western, Indian and Nepali food, and even half-decent Australian wine. The upstairs bar is the liveliest place in the east end of Lhasa. Price: Around ¥60 a head or ¥25 for the breakfast buffet
2 Gangki Cnr of Mentsikhang Lu and Barkhor Square This rooftop place is good value and has great views of the Jokhang. Very popular with Tibetans and often extremely busy. Tibetan tea and tsampa are also available. Price: Main dishes cost ¥10–30
3 Lhasa Kitchen Mentsikhang Lu, opposite the Snowlands Hotel There's excellent Tibetan cuisine at this upmarket but inexpensive place. Try soup with shaphali (meat and vegetable patties) followed by deysee (rice, raisins and yoghurt).
4 Naga Mentsikhang Lu, just up from the Lhasa Kitchen A cosy place that attempts a fusion of Nepalese and French food – pot au feu de yak, for example – with varying success.
5 Namtso In the Banak Shol, Beijing Dong Lu This excellent eatery serves a great set breakfast (¥25) plus vegetable gratin, spinach patties and spaghetti bolognese.
6
New Mandala Southwest corner of Barkhor Square Specializes in Nepali and Indian cuisine, though a major draw is the rooftop seating area with a great view of the Jokhang. The saag aloo is fantastic, as is the ginger tea.
7 Tashi 2 In the Kirey Hotel on the corner of Beijing Dong Lu and Mentsikhang Lu A mainstay of budget travellers in Lhasa, serving a small, inexpensive menu.
8
Tibet Summit Fine Art Café 1 Danjielin Lu, off Zangyi Lu American-owned venture aiming to promote the arts in Tibet by serving up what are arguably the best cakes and coffee in the city amidst works by local artists.
