0891/6323829 Once clean and homely, this place has gone downhill, crossing the line from appealingly chaotic to just worn out; the facilities are shoddy, but it is popular with Chinese backpackers. There's a range of rooms with and without bath, but beware the rooms at the front, which can be noisy. It does, however, have a free laundry service. Price: ¥50–199

www.houseofshambhala.com Newly built in traditional Tibetan style, this boutique hotel, run by the non-profit Shambhala organization, offers stylish suites and a great – if expensive – rooftop restaurant in the Barkhor district. All proceeds go towards development and cultural preservation projects in Tibet. Price: ¥600-800
5 Hubei Hotel Beijing Xi Lu 0891/6820999 Chinese, business-oriented hotel, friendly, well run and offering better value than any of its nearby competitors. Big discounts off season. Price: ¥300-449
6 Kirey Beijing Dong Lu 0891/6323462 Conveniently close to the Barkhor, and with the Tashi 2 restaurant on the premises. Don't be deterred by the characterless, concrete compound; the rooms are pleasantly furnished, and overall this place represents very good value. There is also a free laundry service. 7 Kyichu 19 Beijing Dong Lu 0891/6338824 Centrally located, good value, with friendly Tibetan staff, this is certainly Lhasa's best mid-range choice, with practical, large, and not over-decorated rooms. Rates are negotiable. Price: ¥200-299

6834117 This is Lhasa's most luxurious hotel, with 460 rooms, a range of restaurants, swimming pool (summer only), business centre and in-house doctor. However, standards are lax, and this place is not good value. Price: ¥600-800
9 Mandala 31 Nan Barkhor Jie 0891/6324783 Well located, right on the edge of the Jokhang circuit, and a good mid-range option. It's quiet, and rooms are wood-panelled. Price: ¥200-299
10 Snowlands Hotel Mentsikhang Lu 0891/6323687 Well situated near the Jokhang, with some overpriced doubles in the newer wing and better value doubles and cramped six-bed dorms in the old wing. Price: hostel ¥25–30Price: hotel ¥80
11 Yak Hotel 100 Beijing Dong Lu 0891/6323496 Following a massive overhaul, this hotel is no longer the budget favourite it once was. Common (double) rooms have replaced dorms. Standard rooms offer all the same comforts – TV, tea-making facilities, private bathrooms – but aren't the most stylish. Price: ¥350
