0891/6323829 Once clean and homely, this place has gone downhill, crossing the line from appealingly chaotic to just worn out; the facilities are shoddy, but it is popular with Chinese backpackers. There's a range of rooms with and without bath, but beware the rooms at the front, which can be noisy. It does, however, have a free laundry service. Price: ¥50–199

www.houseofshambhala.com Newly built in traditional Tibetan style, this boutique hotel, run by the non-profit Shambhala organization, offers stylish suites and a great – if expensive – rooftop restaurant in the Barkhor district. Don't be deterred by the characterless, concrete compound; the rooms are pleasantly furnished, and overall this place represents very good value. There is also a free laundry service.
