The Northwest

Arrival

Kashgar's airport operates around five daily flights to and from Ürümqi. It's 14km north of town; the airport bus (¥5) drives straight down Jiefang Lu to China Southern Airlines' Xinjiang office.

The train station is 7km east of town, where bus #28 to Jiefang Bei Lu, minibuses and taxis await new arrivals. Three trains leave daily, one of which terminates at Korla (for buses to Turpan) while the other two continue to Ürümqi.

Just east of the centre on Tiannan Lu is the main long-distance bus station, handling connections from most parts of Xinjiang, including Ürümqi, Kuqa, Korla, Yarkand and Khotan. The international bus station, about 1500m north up Jiefang Bei Lu and just over the river beside the Tuman River hotel, is terminus for luxury buses from Ürümqi, as well as all traffic from Tashkurgan, Sust in Pakistan, and Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan – bus #2 runs down Jiefang Bei Lu from here.
