China Guide

Sichuan and Chongqing

Arrival

The city's seething main long-distance bus – with services to and from Chengdu, Langzhong, Hechuan, Leshan, Emei Shan, Dazu, Zigong, Yibin, Changning (for the Shunan Bamboo Sea) and beyond – is near river level at the western end of the peninsula. The adjacent train station has a single, overnight service to Chengdu and useful links through to Kunming, Guiyang, Xi'an, Beijing, Shanghai and beyond, though note that northbound services may depart from the new north train station, 8km away. To reach the eastern end of the peninsula from either the bus or train station, either hail a taxi or catch bus #102 from the north side of the train-station square to Chaotianmen. There are other bus depots scattered far out in the suburbs, plus a north train station – cabs might be your only option.

The airport is 30km away, connected to the airlines office on Zhongshan San Lu by a shuttle (daily 6am–6.30pm; ¥15), from where bus #103 runs via Jiefangbei to Chaotianmen. It has daily flights to Chengdu, Guiyang, Kunming and provincial capitals across China.

All boats and Three Gorges cruises depart daily from the Ferry Terminal at Chaotianmen Docks on the tip of the peninsula, accessed by funicular trains from the high bank.
