Getting around

The clean, efficient Shanghaimetro (daily 5.50am–11pm; ¥3–7) currently comprises four lines, with more under construction. Line #1 runs north– south with useful stops at Shanghai Zhan, Renmin Square, Changshu Lu (for the former French Concession), Xujiahui and Shanghai Stadium. Line #2 runs east– west with stops at Jing'an Temple, Nanjing Lu, and, in Pudong, Lujiazui and the Science and Technology Museum.

Localbuses run everywhere from around 4am to 10.30pm and cost ¥2, but they are crowded and slow.

Taxis are very easy to get hold of; fares usually come to ¥20–40 for rides within the city. Few drivers speak English.
