2 Good Eats Cafe 694 Shiquan Jie Go for the hot dogs at this American café rather than the fish and chips. Opening time: Open till 4am
3 Indian at the Cross 758 Shiquan Jie Relatively cheap curries and friendly staff. Opening time: Daily 11am–2pm & 5–11pm
4 Korea Restaurant 579 Daichengqiao Lu, at the Shiquan Jie intersection One of the best of a host of unimaginatively named Korean restaurants, with good barbecued beef cooked at the table.
5 Songhelou Caiguan On Taijian Lane, 200m east of Renmin Lu The most famous restaurant in town – it claims to be old enough to have served Emperor Qianlong. The menu is elaborate and long on fish and seafood (crab, eel, squirrel fish and the like), though not cheap Price: Around ¥150 a head
6 Suco Coffee 357 Shiquan Jie A café with excellent smoothies, and they'll recommend a brand of Chinese tea according to your star sign. Wireless internet and comfy seating make for a good place to linger.
7 Xinjiang Yakexi 768 Shiquan Jie Xinjiang comfort food – pulled noodles with vegetables (latiaozi) and naan bread, among others – in a bright dining room bustling with local Uyghurs and tourists. Opening time: Open late
