3 Fuzi Miao Youth Hostel 68 Pingjiangfu Jie 025/86624133 Brightly coloured, no-frills place that's popular with Chinese backpackers. Facilities are good, with bike rental, free Internet and a pool table. Six- and eight-bed dorms have their own bathrooms and are pretty good value, but rooms are a little pricey. Try for one with a view of the river. Price: ¥80-139
4 Grand Metro Hotel 22-1 Xuanwumen 025/83280000 83280111 A low-key hotel with neat, inviting rooms and an excellent location at Xuanwu Hu, within walking distance of the Shizi Qiao food street. Price: ¥200-299

6 Jin's Inn 26 Yunnan Lu 025/83755666 There are several of these good-value budget hotels around town but this is the best located, being central and handy for the best bars. Rooms might be small but they're neat and comfortable and have free Internet. Price: ¥80-139

11 Xuanwu 193 Zhongyang Lu, just north of Hunan Lu 025/83358888 ext 10 83369800 A huge place with good views over Xuanwu Hu Park, this has pretensions to being a luxury hotel, and almost makes it. Price: ¥800
12 Zhanyuan Youth Hostel 80 Zhanyuan Lu, Fuzi Miao 025/66850566 A basic hostel well located in the heart of things at Fuzi Miao – though that can make it noisy at night. There's a bar on the top floor and free wireless. Rooms are pricey, and you can do better elsewhere, but the four- to eight-bed dorms are good value. Price: hostel ¥45Price: ¥80-139
