Hebei

Shanhaiguan

A town at the northern tip of the Bohai Gulf, SHANHAIGUAN, "the Pass Between the Mountains and the Sea", was originally built during the Ming dynasty as a fortress to defend the eastern end of the Great Wall. The wall crosses the Yanshan Mountains to the north, forms the east wall of the town and meets the sea a few kilometres to the south. The town's obvious tourist potential is now being tapped and is best explored by bike.

You'll see plenty of tourist minibuses grouped around the major crossroads in town and at the station, all serving the sights outside Shanhaiguan. Public buses also travel these routes, but if you have the time you're best off travelling by bike: the roads are quiet, the surrounding countryside is strikingly attractive and there are any number of pretty places off the beaten track where you can escape the crowds.
