Taijiang

The small town of TAIJIANG, 55km northeast of Kaili, is the venue for the big Sisters' Meal Festival, when Miao teenagers from all over the region meet to choose a partner; it's held in the sports ground on the fifteenth day of the third lunar month (April/May). A collection of cheap modern buildings centred on a crossroads about 700m from the main road, Taijiang otherwise features nothing much more than a daily market south of the crossroads, and Wenchang Ge, a recently restored Qing temple at the northern end of town, though it's often locked.

Frequent buses run to Tajiang from Kaili (2hr). Taijiang's accommodation is limited to guesthouses which surround the crossroads, such as Lidu Lüguan (Price: Under ¥50), or the clean Xingguang Gongguan ( 0855/5328396; Price: ¥80-139), on the road between town and the highway.
