1 Haodama Top floor of Niko-Niko Do Plaza, corner of Jiefang Lu and Zhongshan Lu A busy place with a huge variety of snacks and light meals from all over China, laid out in front of the hard-working chefs. You wander round inspecting the food, then wait for it to be delivered to your table. Price: Dishes ¥5–20
2 Little Italian Up past the Sheraton hotel on Binjiang Lu Small, friendly café with very good coffee, ginger and lemon tea, and light Western-style meals.
3 Natural Café Yiren Lu. Eclectic "foreign" menu including spaghetti, borscht, pizza, Southeast Asian coconut curries and steaks. Price: ¥18–50
4 Xiao Nan Guo 3 Wenming Lu Big, bright, cheerful and very popular local-style restaurant, without your menu choices languishing outside in cages. There's no English menu, so non-Chinese-speakers will need to do a round of tables and point. Price: Mains from ¥18
5 Yaxu Nong Jia 159 Nanhuan Lu One of several smart, "country-style" restaurants along this street, with staff dressed in peasant garb and captive snakes, cane rats, crabs, pheasants and fish outside awaiting your delectation. Price: Around ¥60 for two

Yi Yuan 106 Nanhuan Lu Authentic Sichuanese food, comfortable surroundings and friendly, English-speaking staff make this a nice place to dine. Try the "strange-flavoured" chicken, green beans with garlic, sugared walnuts, or smoked duck. Price: Two or three can eat well for ¥80
7 Zhengyang Zhengyang Jie Slow-simmered soups, plus Cantonese roast meats, sandpots and steamed greens, with popular pavement tables for when the weather is hot. Price: Around ¥25 a head
