Anshun
The town of ANSHUN is a healthy but rough-around-the-edges marketplace, whose modern facade vanishes the moment you leave the main roads and find yourself among muddy alleys running between tumbledown shacks and wobbly wooden houses. The only reason to stop here is for a visit to the spectacular Zhijin Caves, 100km away.
Anshun's central crossroads is overlooked to the northwest by a hillock topped by Bai Ta, a short Ming-dynasty pagoda, with a park around the base containing some representative, restored antique buildings, including a long stone church with a Chinese-style bell tower. The other point of interest is Wenhua Miao (¥3), a Ming Confucian hall hidden away in the northeastern backstreets that, while somewhat neglected, has some superbly carved dragon pillars, which rival those at Qufu's Confucius Mansion.
