Fujian, Guangdong and Hainan Island

Arrival

Xiamen's train station, connected by city buses #3 and #7, is on Xiahe Lu, about 4km east from the seafront.

There are several long-distance bus stations – Hubin, Songbai and Wucun – with connections to Fuzhou, Quanzhou Longyan, Yongding, Guangzhou and Shantou. You'll most likely arrive either 2km northeast of the centre on Hubin Nan Lu (exit the station, turn right and it's 100m to the stop for city bus #23 to the seafront), or about 200m north of the train station at the Wucun bus station.

The most central arrival point is the Heping Ferry Terminal, served by weekly boats (monthly in winter) to and from Hong Kong ( 0592/2022517; 18hr; ¥385 to ¥2180). As yet, there's no regular service to Jinmen Island in Taiwan.

Twelve kilometres to the north of town, Xiamen's airport is connected to the waterfront area by bus #27. Flights link Xiamen with Wuyi Shan, Fuzhou, Guangzhou and several other cities in eastern China.
