1 Coffee Time Jiefang Lu Upmarket– looking Chinese interpretation of a Western restaurant. Despite appearances prices are reasonable, with mains including pizza and steak going for ¥20–50, and the menu also boasts a vast array of teas, fresh juices and cocktails. Price: Open until 1am
2 Ganghai Canting Jiefang Lu Locals-oriented teahouse with tiled floor, dated wooden furniture and great dim sum.
3 Haikou Binguan Daying Houlu With both Western and Chinese restaurants, this hotel is a good bet for local favourites, including steamed chicken in coconut milk and seafood rolls in coconut sauce. Not too expensive either – a whole chicken or duck costs around ¥60. Price: Most dishes ¥20
4 Hunan Ren Nanbao Lu Smart, ethnic-looking place serving up traditional Hunan dishes at reasonable prices. One of the better options in the town centre.
5 Japanese Floor 3, Tailongcheng building, Datong Lu Sushi at ¥5–10 per plate, with set one-dish meals from ¥15.

Tailonghui Shifu 22 Haixiu Dong Lu One of just a few places offering overseas food that isn't pizza or burgers, this first-floor Thai restaurant is a real find – the tom yum soup and green-curry mussels are to die for. Price: ¥20–30 per main dish
7 Tong Shan Tang Vegetarian 33 Haidian Sandong Lu, near the junction with Haihong Lu This Buddhist gem has fake-meat versions of almost any Chinese dish you care to think of, and can even rustle up a "hamburger" if asked. A little hard to find, but worth the effort.
8 Xianzong Lin Nanbao Lu Cute place with a Western/Chinese menu that includes pizza and some exotic cold drinks – black-sesame-seed milkshakes for one.
9 Yong He Dim Sum Wuzhishan Lu Dim sum given the fast-food treatment. Order from the counter and in a couple of minutes fresh, cheap dim sum is brought direct to your table. No English menu, but plenty of photos to point to.
