Fujian, Guangdong and Hainan Island

Arrival

A five-kilometre-wide semicircle immediately north of the Hong Kong border, central Shenzhen is evenly bisected by the rail line that descends straight down Jianshe Lu to the Luo Hu border crossing. The border area itself is defined by the massive Luo Hu bus station to the east and train station to the west.

The Hong Kong border is open daily, from 6.30am to midnight. You need to get on to the overpass from upstairs at the train station and then head south past souvenir stalls, roasted meat vendors and pet shops. Border formalities on both sides are streamlined, and it shouldn't take more than an hour to find yourself on the other side, purchasing a ticket for the KCR (Kowloon– Canton Railway) train into Hong Kong.

Shuttle buses (30–40min; ¥20) operate between the internationalairport, 20km west of town, and the city centre; a taxi costs ¥120–150. The port is 15km west of the centre, at Shekou, from where you can catch bus #204 into town, or take a taxi for around ¥75. Shekou runs ferries to Macau (4 daily; 8.15am–6.30pm; 90min; ¥125), Zhuhai (every 30min; 7.30am–8.30pm; 1hr; ¥80) Hong Kong (7 daily; 7.45am–9.30pm; 1hr; ¥110), Kowloon (6 daily; 8.30am–5.30pm; 1hr; ¥110) and Hong Kong Airport (hourly; 30min; ¥240).
