The 1920s-style buildings inside the Provincial Museum grounds are those of the former Zhongshan University; the writer Lu Xun lectured here and his life is outlined in photographs. A more modern structure houses the museum proper; its best features are a natural history display, incorporating an innovative walk-through "jungle" with spotlit creatures hidden in the undergrowth, as well as several rooms of exquisitely fine porcelain, carved jade and Ming household ornaments. The lack of visitors and explanatory notes somewhat deadens it all, but it's remarkable to see such a high standard of exhibits.
