1 Babyface 83 Chang Di Da Ma Lu (Yanjiang Lu) Offspring of the Beijing and Shanghai superclub, this far smaller version is expensive but, for the moment, the place to be seen.

2 Bonbon 358–364 Chang Di Da Ma Lu Little brother of one of Shanghai's favourite clubs, this place is fun, with banging tunes, a lively atmosphere and occasional big-name DJs.

3 Café Elle's Floor 2, Huaxin Dasha, northeast corner of Huanshi Lu and Shuiyin Lu The best jazz and blues venue in the city, with regular international bands and nightly mixes of Latin and dance.

4 Cave Huanshi Dong Lu, west from the Garden hotel Italian cantina and dance club, hidden down in a basement, with DJs or drummers playing to an ultraviolet-lit crowd.

5 Deep Anger Music Club 183 Yanjiang Lu Vast, Gothic-style venue offering a range of entertainment from disco to live music and floor shows.

6 Peace Road Heping Lu First in a string of bars along this street in the Overseas Chinese Village. Nightly live music on two floors – everything from Canto-pop to Chinese rock and more offbeat local bands.

7 Tang Club 1 Jianshe Liu Ma Lu One of Guangzhou's more refined night spots with a resident band knocking out techno, reggae, pop and Latin hits.

8 Yes Liuhua Plaza, Dongfeng Xi Lu, south of Liuhua Park Huge, popular, full-on house experience at maximum decibels.
